Wossman High to receive community health clinic, school board to post offers soon
MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Wossman High School is getting a community health clinic. It will also serve as a classroom for students interested in medicine. At the regular school board meeting on January 24, 2022, the board approved the final layout and will begin dropping bids next week.
Superintendent Dr. Brent Vidrine said the health clinic will cost around $2 million.
“It’s a clinic, a health care center, and so we have the lobby, the reception, you come back and that’s where the patients will check in,” said Architecture Plus designer Dustin Gibbs. .
Gibbs said the clinic will be built in the former Wossman High School country house. He said there will be six examination rooms and a classroom to train students who are interested in the medical field.
Vidrine said they hope the bids will be approved by March and the clinic will be built later this year.
“We’re looking at around 5 months so if it’s not August it all depends on construction delays. You know it’s hard to get material, so we’ll see, but our target is still August 22,” Vidrine said.
By August 2022, they hope the old country house will be completely renovated. Wossman High’s principal, Dr. Harrington Watson, said the health clinic was much needed.
“We have a lot of students who come to school with myriad problems, and often they don’t have anyone to take care of things at home, so kids come to school sick,” Watson said. . “We need to have a place where we can show them where they need to be, what can be done to benefit them and put them in a place where they will be healthy and that’s the main goal is to have a healthy child because if children are healthy then they are ready to learn.
Primary Health Services Center CEO and President Catherine Tonore said that in addition to having a health care provider on site, they will also have a therapist.
“Students are depressed and have a lot of anxiety and we are able to extend that to the school as well with a therapist every day,” Tonore said.
The health clinic will be available to Monroe City School District students, staff and faculty.
