What is an advertising ID on Android? How to reset it to limit ads on your phone – gadgets to use


If you are annoyed by the ads on your Android phone, you can stop them. Android smartphones have a unique alphanumeric advertising identifier that is shared with advertising companies to track your app activity. You cannot delete this ID, however, when you reset it, a new ID is assigned to your device, which requires advertisers to create a new profile on your phone. So today I’m going to walk you through how to reset ad ID to limit ads on your phone.

What is an advertising identifier?

Advertising ID is a unique identifier for advertising on smartphones provided by Google Play services. However, since it is editable, it gives you more controls and offers app developers a system to monetize their apps and services. Users can reset their credentials or even turn off personalized ads that don’t give apps their credentials.

These IDs work just like “cookies” in web browsers, so they also track, share, or sometimes even sell your app activity. Thus, it is used to serve ads based on your interests. Let’s know how to get rid of it.

How do I reset the advertising ID?

You should know that you cannot deactivate this Advertising ID and the best you can do is reset it. So when you do it regularly, apps won’t be able to read your app activity. Here’s how to reset it:

1. First, go to your phone’s Settings menu and scroll down to “Google” settings.

2. On the next page, tap “Announcements”.

3. After that, tap “Reset Advertising ID” and then tap “OK” in the confirmation window.

That’s all. Your phone’s advertising ID will be reset and you will have fewer advertisements when you do this. As mentioned, you need to reset it regularly.

Bonus tip: stop personalized ads

If you don’t want app developers to see your data at all, you can turn off personalized ads that will prevent your ID from being shared with advertisers.

To do this, go to Settings and selectt Google, so what Ads. Here activate Disable ad personalization. To select Okay in the confirmation pop-up window.

You can also do this on iOS. Just go to Settings> Privacy> Advertising and there switch to the Limit ad tracking.

As per the latest update to Google Play Services, the Advertising ID will be automatically removed when you turn off ad personalization. However, you will still see advertisements, but these will not be based on your interests.
