Most Memorable Moments from the Fashion Awards – WWD
The Fashion Awards are set to return to the Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday, November 29.
The star-studded event attracted some of fashion’s biggest personalities and created some memorable moments.
Here, WWD looks back at some of the Fashion Awards highlights over the years, from Rihanna’s PDA with her handsome A $ AP Rocky in 2019 to longtime Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani making her last public appearance at the 2016 award before his death from lung cancer.
2019: Rihanna helped the Fashion Awards grab the world’s attention when she attended the event with singer, rapper and A $ AP Rocky sweetheart. She was there to receive the Urban Luxe award for her Fenty brand. To add to the star factor, Janet Jackson made a surprise appearance to present her with the accolade.
“First of all, I mean Stephanie Phair, that’s why you held me so tight, huh?” Rihanna said while addressing the chairman of the British Fashion Council.
“Thank you very much for believing in me as a young black woman and for giving me the opportunity to do what I love the most,” she added, especially thanking the Arnault family.
2018: Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, surprised Fashion Award-goers when she took the stage to present Givenchy’s artistic director, Clare Waight Keller, who designed her wedding dress, with the UK Clothing Designer’s Award for women of the year.
“It is such a pleasure to be here, celebrating British fashion and British designers in my new home in the UK. I see many familiar faces, many of you that I have known for a long time.” said Markle, who wore an elegant one-shoulder Givenchy dress and rocked her baby bump throughout her speech. At the time, she was pregnant with her oldest child Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
She spoke of women empowering themselves with the clothes they wear and the evolution of fashion culture: âIt was cool to be cruel, now it’s cool to be niceâ, she said. she declared.
2017: Naomi Campbell paid a moving tribute to Azzedine Alaïa, who died suddenly in Paris two weeks before the event. She was joined by an army of models, including Stéphanie Seymour, Imaan Hammam, Veronica Webb, Mariacarla Boscono and Marie-Sophie Wilson, who have all worked with Alaïa at some point in their careers.
âEveryone in this room knows that Azzedine has succeeded in transforming a woman’s body into something special – making you look stunning and still like a woman. He captured the essence of femininity. But beyond his work as a designer, from the second day I met him, he became my daddy, âsaid Campbell.
âAzzedine was a protector, a teacher, a seeker and an advocate for all that is good and positive in this world. I am proud to honor, with his daughters, a fashion giant and a true master of humanity, âshe added.
2016: It has been a great year for Gucci and Demna Gvasalia. Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele took home the International Accessories Designer Award, while Brand President and CEO Marco Bizzarri won the International Business Leader Award.
Gvasalia for Balenciaga won the International Ready-to-Wear Designer Award, while his Vetements brand won the International Urban Luxury brand, a new category at the renowned event, which was previously known as British Fashion. Awards.
Longtime Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani, who was there to receive the Swarovski Award for Positive Change, made her last public appearance before dying of lung cancer two weeks later.
2015 : To promote “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie”, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders dressed up as characters from the popular TV series to host the event. They spent time with Stella McCartney, who appeared in the film, at the after party. (In the series, Saunders’ character Edina Monsoon was obsessed with McCartney).
The year also saw Anna Wintour deliver a seven-minute speech to honor fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld with the Outstanding Achievement Award.
âHe has the urgency and daring of a young designer, even though he has been creating new collections every season for the past sixty years. Fashion is the personal expression of a changing world. Design is the art of noticing these changes and announcing them in clothes that millions of people can wear. Karl mastered this process. But it is his attention, his insatiable appetite for knowledge, that invigorates his work and takes it beyond, âsaid Wintour.
2014 : John Galliano, Creative Director of Maison Margiela, presented Anna Wintour with her Award of Excellence at the London Coliseum. It was a big moment for both, but especially for Galliano who had recently returned to the fashion industry after being fired by Dior for anti-Semitic and racist comments he kept while intoxicated.
Galliano said the veteran editor âcontacted me when I became an outcast. No words can express my gratitude to her. Wintour, who took the stage a few minutes later, ended her speech – in a trembling and tearful voice – with a tribute to her two children, “by far my most remarkable achievement”.
2013: Fashion designer and partner Mick Jagger’s L’Wren Scott made one of her last public appearances at the British Fashion Awards in 2013, wearing an origami-inspired floral look from her Spring 2014 collection. The designer later committed suicide in her apartment in downtown New York.
